RESOLVED
- The Town of Red Hook hereby endorses the principles of sustainable community development as developed through this certification process, and agrees to apply these principles whenever possible in its planning, policy making, and municipal practices.
Show preamble — 10 WHEREAS clauses
- WHEREAS, the Town of Red Hook has entered into and committed to the work of the Audubon International Sustainable Communities Program, an international, science-based, third-party certification program that guides communities through a customized journey to become healthy and vibrant places in which to live, work and play
- WHEREAS, the Town adopted resolution No. 52 on May 14, 2019, expressing this commitment and authorizing the Town's Climate Smart Taskforce to pursue certification in the Audubon International Sustainable Communities Program on behalf of the Town
- WHEREAS, Laurie Husted, chair of the Climate Smart Taskforce, was appointed Sustainability Coordinator, in order to establish priorities for the project and develop a plan to further sustainability goals and complete the certification process
- WHEREAS, the Sustainability Coordinator and the Climate Smart Taskforce have worked on this project in partnership with the local grassroots organization Red Hook Together, whose mission is to blend the town's cultural, agricultural, educational, business, and tourism endeavors to create a sustainable community
- WHEREAS, this work has led to the Town of Red Hook receiving Audubon International's Green Community Award, signifying the successful completion of Stage One of the Sustainable Communities Program
- WHEREAS, the Town of Red Hook has shown its commitment to sustainability in its own operations as exemplified in the ongoing efforts of town committees such as the Conservation Advisory Council, Community Preservation Fund Program, the Greenway and Trails Committee, the Tree Preservation Commission, the Energy Committee and the Agriculture & Open Space Committee
- WHEREAS, the adoption of the principles of sustainable resource management from Audubon International can provide a framework that will assist Town employees and elected officials in moving in a more sustainable direction
- WHEREAS, the willingness of the Town to move in the direction of becoming a certified sustainable community, and to promote the values of sustainability with inclusion and equity as its central value, can serve as a model for others and encourage equitable economic development in our Town and region
- WHEREAS, through this work, community members have developed a shared vision to work together to enhance the lives of those who live, work and study in Red Hook
- WHEREAS, through this partnership with Red Hook Together, which includes Historic Red Hook, Red Hook Public Library, the Tivoli Free Library, Red Hook Community Center, Red Hook Central School District, Bard College, and other local groups, the Town recognizes that sustainable practices contribute to strengthened relationships that build well-being, including social and economic flourishing, and increase equity for all community members
