Village Hall Exterior: Improving Public Spaces & Communication

Make Communication more accessible:

  1. New back door & police phone require updated signage.

  2. Existing directory is mounted by Broadway door & is not accessible.

  3. Feedback from Communications survey called for a Notice board & Marquee sign.

  4. Language Access Grant funds can be used for accessible signage.

Create useful and beautiful spaces:

  1. Front sidewalk needs a repair 2. Grass verge at prince street is located over a dry well that will be cleaned out this summer.

  2. Scheduled repairs give Village an opportunity to improve those spaces.

  1. Narrow walkways.

  2. Current Tree damaging sidewalk 3. Difficult to access bus because of cables, bus sign & street tree

  3. Many of existing plants are invasive 5. No fixed signage to notify people of special events &/ or public hearings.

  4. Directory is not at main entrance.

  1. Remove tree blocking bus stop and add tree to north bumpout in line with existing street trees.

  2. Re-orient bench to face bus 3. Create an easier space to get on bus (and to wait for bus) by reducing the south planter.

  3. Collaborate with PSC, VGC & RH Garden Club to plant trees & native pollinators.

  4. Use Language Access Grant to purchase marquee sign that can accommodate a line of Spanish translation.

Challenges of Prince St Entrance:

  1. Planter has blooms only once a year. 2. Outdated signage needs updating and current interior notice board is only available when building is open.

  2. Bench faces garbage can 4. Grass verge has little use aside from providing a seasonal snow buffer.

Red Hook Black History Trail

Bill Jeffway October 31, 2020

https://dchsny.org/rhbht/

Idea for Next year:

  1. In NY State the Gradual Abolition of Slavery granted freedom. This act declared that anyone born into slavery before July 4, 1799, would finally be emancipated on July 4, 1827.

  2. Next year, July 4, 2027, will be the 200th anniversary of the end of Slavery in NY State.

  3. Prince St was named after a Black Resident Prince Ellsworth (his house was the first house on the street). We have an opportunity in the Prince St Garden, to share the history of Prince st (as outlined in Bill Jeffways project) and also recognize and commemorate that next year will mark 200 years of freedom for New Yorkers.

Funding, How will this be paid for?

1. Accessible Signage: Language Access Grant is a pre-approved Grant that will cover signs and notice board ($25,569.52 balance remaining in equipment). I have requested quotes from several local and regional sign fabricators. 2. Sidewalk Repair & Paver replacement : Streets & Sidewalks budget 3. 2 Street Trees: We will be requesting trees from Village Green for fall planting day.

4. Plantings: Hoping to engage with the Village Green, Public Spaces Committee, Climate Smart Committee & Red Hook Garden Club to see if they have interest in sourcing native plantings & facilitating planting days. 5. Benches: Already have will reoriente the two existing benches 6. Table: We have picnic table ready in storage at Highway Garage.
