Public Spaces Initiative March Board Update

Mission To develop and facilitate the creation of public park, art, and community spaces throughout the Village of Red Hook

Public Meetings are held the 4th Saturday of each month at 10 am, in person at the Village Hall unless otherwise noted (email the PSI chair Ash Bradley‐Rickard for the meeting location). The third meeting of the year was held at 10am on Saturday March 30[th] at Village Hall.

Key Topics

  • The topic of public purpose for spending funds was discussed and the Chair will be contacting the Events team to coordinate upcoming events for the year.

  • As part of the PSI outreach efforts the committee will be tabling at the Red Hook Repair Café on April 6[th] at the Red Hook Community Center

  • June 15th Hello Spring Event (PSI) will be held in partnership with RHCC. Specific activities will be discussed, but will include crafts for kids, garden advice, and activities centered aroung the seed commons library

  • Other events:

    • HardScrabble Day

    • Oct 19[th] – Pumpkins in the Park Event (PSI)

    • Other possible events with Historic Red Hook at the “Then & Now” event, Composting Event at Recycling Center.

    • Pollinator Pathway: Linda has finalized the Pollinator Pathway website submission. The Red Hook page is live at https://www.pollinator‐pathway.org/towns/red‐hook

  • David is working with the Library on their Pond initiative and has collaborated in identifying site appropriate species of plants with the director Alex including:

    • Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)

    • White Wood Aster (Eurybia divaracata)

    • Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)

    • Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana)

    • Broadleaf Arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia)

    • Lyreleaf Sage (Salvia lyrata)

  • Deputy Town Supervisor Bill Hamel joined as a guest speaker and presented a lot of information on pollinator gardens. He shared information about the Town’s efforts to look at green spaces that could used for pollinator gardens, possibly alongside current and/or with solar farm sites
