Deputy Mayor Melkorka Kjarval’s Monthly Reports

Red Hook Together:

Red Hook Together meets the 1st Thu. of the month - at alternating times of day and locations. Invitations and meeting times are coordinated by Bard CCE. This month's meeting was held in person on Feb 1st at noon, at the Community Center, lunch was provided by the Community Center. Discussion was limited to updates from various attendees representing their organizations.

Town of Red Hook Economic Development Committee:

The EDC holds public meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wed. of the month, at 8:40 am in the Red Hook Village Hall Courtroom. Next meeting will be on Valentines day on Wed, Feb 14th at 8:40 am. This Month's Report has been prepared by the Mayor as she attended both of January’s meetings.

Village of Red Hook Communications Committee:

The Communications committee meets every 1st Wed. of the month at 1:30 pm in the Village Hall conference room. Feb 7th’s meeting was reviewing progress on the ongoing Language Access project progress and various other ongoing projects.

Village Events Committee:

The events committee has changed the scheduled day that we meet to the 2nd Tues. of each month at 6pm at Village Hall. There was no meeting held in January. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb 13th, at 6 pm in the Village courtroom.

Village of Red Hook Human Relations Committee:

The Human Relations Committee holds public meetings every 1st Thu. of the month at 7 pm in the Village Hall conference room. There were no meetings held in the month of February and next month's meeting will be March 7th.

Village of Red Hook Highway Department:

  1. No all-night street parking is permitted in the Village from November 1st thru March 31st. Vehicles parked on the streets between 11 PM - 6 AM may be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense.

  2. Please keep streets clean for seasonal plowing; property owners are reminded to remove athletic equipment, garbage receptacles and/or any other temporary obstacles from the side of streets to prevent possible damage during snow & ice removal operations.

  3. Snow and ice on Sidewalks in the Village: The property owner and/or occupant of every building with an adjoining sidewalk must remove all snow and ice within 24 hours after the end of a snow or ice storm. If snow or ice is not cleared within that time period, the Village may remove it at the cost of $2 per linear foot to the property owner. Charges will be assessed and collected with the next tax levy.

  4. Potholes: If you are concerned about a pothole on a Village road you can call the Village Clerk’s office to report it, or use the ‘report a concern’ form on the Village website at: redhookvillage.org/concern . Please be aware that State Highways are maintained by NYS DOT, and the Village is not allowed to conduct repairs on a State Highway. If the pothole appears on a State Highway (either Broadway [Rt 9] or Market [Rt199]) - You may still alert the village so that we can forward your concern to NYSDOT, or you can report a pothole directly to the NYSDOT by calling 1.800.POTHOLE (1.800.768.4653).

  5. Street Light Complaints: If you notice a street light out - you may notify Central Hudson -

directly by going to: cenhud.com/en/outages/streetlight out/ and submitting the location of the lamp in their notification form.

  1. Street Brining Presentation: The Town of Red Hook is considering Brining, which is a proactive approach to prevent snow or ice from bonding to the road surface by applying a liquid solution to streets before a winter storm starts. The Town will have a presentation on this technology and equipment at the Town Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 28th.

7. Scrap Metal Program

Revenue received since the last report was$917.40
Total revenue for this Fiscal Year (Jun 2023- May 2024) to date is$5,688.70
Since the Program’s inception, in Sep 2007, donations have yielded a total of$53,566.84

Proceeds from the program go toward the purchase of tools & equipment for the Public Works Department. Residents and businesses interested in donating scrap metal may contact the Village Clerk’s Office to schedule a pickup.
